The country is remembering its first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru today. Born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, Nehru's 132st birth anniversary is on Saturday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi bowed to him on this occasion. In a tweet, the Prime Minister said that 'My humble tribute to the first Prime Minister of the country, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, on his birth anniversary.'

Jawaharlal Nehru was very fond of children and children used to call him 'Chacha Nehru'. Before 1964, Children's Day was celebrated in India on 20 November, but after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, it was decided to celebrate his birthday on 14 November as Children's Day.

Children's Day 2021: 

Jawaharlal Nehru was jailed in British-ruled India for the first time in 1921 after calling for a boycott of the visit of the Prince of Wales. He described his jail time as the "greatest joy" of the protests against colonial rule. He spent nearly a decade behind bars on different counts. Most of the times he went to jail for supporting Mahatma Gandhi in his civil disobedience movements. Nehru was elected the first Prime Minister of the country in 1947. After this he remained in this post for the next 17 years i.e. till his death.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi also posted a tribute to Nehru. He wrote- 'Today India is celebrating the birth anniversary of its first PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji. A huge visionary who laid the foundation of our country with brotherhood, egalitarianism and modern outlook. Our effort should be to preserve these values.
